THIS WEEK IN ART CLASS: UPPER SCHOOL (9-8-17)

Students in Upper School polished up their drawing skills this week! We did some observational drawings, closely observing both a geometric and organic still life. Students were challenged to set up accurate space; with overlapping, placement, and a little bit of shading. Beginners practiced drawing accurately while advanced students practiced using values to model the drapery on the organic still life.

Then, we all tried our hand at drawing a realistic eye and facial proportions. Students were shown common mistakes when drawing the human eye - the iris usually is partially hidden below the upper lid and eyelashes are curved, not straight! We talked about the anatomy of the spherical eyeball; including the retina, pupil, and muscles of the iris. Also, students were shown how to make the eyeball appear 3-dimensional with shading below the upper lid and on each side of the sphere. If you were absent for this lesson, this Youtube video shows the "Do's & Don'ts" of drawing the eye!

This time lapse video of an artist painting an eye is a great example of hyper-realism! He has amazing skills!

Finally, we went through the proportions of the face, step by step, so that students were better prepared to draw their self-portraits next week. Below is an example of how to use correct proportions:
