K3 - K4

Welcome to Heritage Christian Academy! We are so glad you are here! Preschool children delight in all things creative and it is my privilege to be their art teacher this year. Students will have the opportunity to explore many different art materials from paints to play-dough!

K3 and K4 enjoyed learning about lines this morning and using lots of art materials in the process. First, we watched a short story book video, "Little Green," and practiced drawing the path of the hummingbird with our fingers in the air. We drew swirly lines, zig-zag lines, and straight lines. Then, students used crayons to practice drawing lots of lines on their papers, filling in some areas with marker ink. Finally, they took turns using a spray bottle to mix their ink colors a bit with water. It was so much fun! All the students loved meeting our Art room mascot, the Chick-fil-A cow, and giving him a "High-Five." At the end of class, we also watched a short video about a little boy with a lot of imagination: Harold and the Purple Crayon.

We had our very first art class today! We read the book, Rudy and Claude Splash Into Art, by Adam McHeffey. This picture book tells the funny story of two friends who are discovering what art means. After the story, we used crayons to draw a picture of our own. Students practiced following directions, taking care of the materials, and cleaning up. Today's lesson was an introductory one and I will use their drawings to gauge where students are developmentally. Many preschool students are in what is formally known as the "Scribble Stage," but a few can draw simple recognizable images.  Fine motor skill development is so important, and art class gives preschool students the opportunity to strengthen their hand muscles as well as their creativity! As students explore a variety of art materials, they will learn to express their ideas in all kinds of ways. Later this year, we will explore basic lines and shapes as we use paints, play dough, texture sheets, and other hands on materials. I can't wait to see the amazing works of art our littlest students will create!

Parents, if you have any questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to contact me at annanichols@hcachristian.org.

Genesis 1:27 tells us that we are created in the image of God. John 1:1-3 explains that all things were made by Jesus, the First Artist!  Everyone is an artist; everyone is a creative individual - it just comes out of us in different ways. Some people sing, dance, play a musical instrument, act, or paint and draw. Others like to cook, sew, write stories and poetry, or work with wood. To be human is to create!
