5TH GRADE

May 2, 2019
5th grade used oil pastels to apply color to their fired ceramic relief sculptures which were then dipped into a black paint bath. The paint seeps into all the areas that were not colored, creating a beautiful contrast effect. In addition, some students chose to do a "glitter dip" for their piece. Mrs. Nichols will spray a clear finish on these before the art show. The results are pretty impressive! Trey's sculpture of a lizard is featured in the above video, shot by our very own Ashlyn. Thanks, Ashlyn!

January/February 2019

5th grade students learned all about clay this semester! They each created an original relief sculpture, learning a variety of techniques and experimenting with ideas. First, we discussed the book they were reading with Mrs. Lewis, Prince Caspian, by C.S. Lewis. We talked about story telling and the different imagery the author used. Some things were historical (based on the Middle Ages) and some things were completely fantastic (based on imagination). Then, students brainstormed different ideas before attempting their sculptures. Some of the ideas included lizards, ninjas, birthday cakes, and weapons such as swords and shields. They turned out great! We are waiting to get them fired in a kiln and will finish them with color over the next few weeks.

August/September 2018
Welcome back! I am delighted to have our talented 5th grade students back in art class. We are creating art based on a nature theme, focusing on birds. We read in the Bible about God's encouragement to us, that He will cover us just as a bird covers her young with her wings. He loves us so much, He promised us protection and to guide our steps.

Students discussed different kinds of birds and the way they are designed, with specialized beaks and talons and hollow bones for flight. Then, we chose an image of an eagle to carefully draw from observation. The pictures ranged from highly complex photos to very simple drawings, so students could choose one they felt confident in drawing. It takes practice to develop skills in any area, and art is no different! Students were encouraged to draw slowly and spend more time looking at the picture of the eagle than the drawing itself. We used tempera paint to finish these gorgeous pieces! I am so proud of their work!

Matthew 10:29, 30
Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground outside your Father's care. And even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. So don't be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.

Isaiah 40:31
But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles.

Psalm 91
He will cover you with his feathers, and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart.

Parents, to take advantage of our time together, please encourage your children to make art at home! It is so important that they continue to develop their art skills as well as exercise the creative parts of their brains. We all know the value of the arts and hands on learning! It will help your child tremendously to have daily access to paper and drawing supplies as well as sensory materials such as play-dough and paints.
