4TH GRADE

 January/February 2019
4th graders show off their beautiful designs based on quilts! They learned about the famous Quilt-makers of Gee's Bend, Alabama and discussed their own family quilt making traditions. Then, they used rulers and math skills to draw a 2 inch grid and experimented with wallpaper and fabric scraps to make a pleasing design on the grid. I am proud of their work!

This quilt was handmade by Mrs. Nichols' mother in law, Mrs. Orez Veazey Nichols.

Here is another handmade quilt from the Nichols' family. This one is over 100 years old and was made by Mrs. Orez Veazey Nichols' grandmother.

We spent one of our art classes learning how to use a pottery wheel! All the students had an opportunity to try it. It was fun learning to open up the centered clay and stretch it vertically into the shape of a little pot. It's also a little bit harder than it looks! After the teacher demonstration, the students coached each other, learning from one another's mistakes!

August/September 2018
Welcome back! I am delighted to have our amazing 4th grade students back in art class. We are creating art based on a nature theme, focusing on birds. We read in the Bible about God's encouragement to us, that He will cover us just as a bird covers her young with her wings. He loves us so much, He promised us protection and to guide our steps. Students discussed different kinds of birds and the way they are designed, with specialized beaks and talons and hollow bones for flight. Then, we chose an image of an eagle to carefully draw from observation. It takes practice to develop skills in any area, and art is no different! Students were encouraged to draw slowly and spend more time looking at the picture of the eagle than the drawing itself. We will paint these drawings when we meet again.

Matthew 10:29, 30
Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground outside your Father's care. And even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. So don't be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.

Isaiah 40:31
But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles.

Psalm 91
He will cover you with his feathers, and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart.

Parents, to take advantage of our time together, please encourage your children to make art at home! It is so important that they continue to develop their art skills as well as exercise the creative parts of their brains. We all know the value of the arts and hands on learning! It will help your child tremendously to have daily access to paper and drawing supplies as well as sensory materials such as play-dough and paints.
