In addition, students will learn about historical and contemporary artists as well as aesthetics. Please click on this link for more information about grading, etc.: Upper School

MIXED MEDIA UNIT; "THE BOX"
This project was a personal one; students were assigned to express an idea visually by covering a wooden box with paper or other materials. They also learned to apply the Principles of Design in their work; Unity, Variety, Contrast, Balance, Repetition, Movement, and Emphasis. Some students created visual memories, while others expressed their personalities through this assignment. The pieces are beautiful!

Students were challenged to come up with a visual symbol or metaphor to represent the meaning of a personal scripture. They designed a collage (using wordart.com) as well as drawings to communicate this idea:

Below are some of our "before instruction" (right) and "after instruction" self portraits. Many of these students did not believe they could draw at all, and look what they were able to accomplish! Amazing! Please take a minute to encourage your child for their hard work in learning a few drawing skills.

Students participated in several drawing challenges this week along with learning more about animation. We viewed video clips about Pixar Animation Studios, learning about innovation in technology when "Monster's Inc." was made. Animating realistic fur used to be impossible! Movie makers are still using the advanced computer programming invented for "Monster's Inc." in films such as "Zootopia." Also, we practiced drawing the light on a piece of popcorn, showing variations in value with white oil pastels and charcoal pencils. The students had to be careful not to eat the piece they were drawing!

Week Five:
Students measured a grid both on their portrait photos and the drawing paper. The grid serves as a measuring tool, allowing the artist to place features of the face exactly. Portrait drawing can be pretty intimidating! Our 9th and 10th graders are doing a fabulous job drawing slowly and methodically, trying to match the features of their face in a realistic drawing!

Psalm 139:14
I will give thanks and praise to You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; wonderful are Your works, and my soul knows it very well.

Students have been learning to tap in to the power of the "right brain," learning to see accurately to improve drawing skills. We practiced drawing exercises based on the book, Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain, by
Betty Edwards, and then we began drawing from life. Below are students in the Art Appreciation class observing and drawing a still life of basic geometric forms.
