3RD GRADE

February 2019
Third graders visited the Planetarium at Samford University recently, learning all about the known universe and our solar system. In art class, students used soft pastels to create their own galaxy drawing, splatter painting some white stars to finish the illusion of space. Then, they cut out a variety of planets from painted papers and designed their own original alien! We also learned about Alan Bean, the famous astronaut who is also an artist! Mr. Bean uses actual moon dust in his paintings, memories of his visit to the moon. It is fascinating to see how he uses tools and textures in these beautiful works of art!

We even got to try out the pottery wheel before Christmas!

Finished 3rd grade bird paintings

August/September 2018
Welcome back! I am delighted to have our amazing 3rd grade students back in art class. This month, we are creating art based on a nature theme, focusing on birds. We read in the Bible about God's encouragement to us, that He will cover us just as a bird covers her young with her wings. He loves us so much, He promised us protection and to guide our steps. Students discussed different kinds of birds and the way they are designed, with specialized beaks and talons and hollow bones for flight. Then, we chose an image of sparrow to carefully draw from observation. Younger students had the choice of following along with Mrs. Nichols step by step. We will paint these drawings when we meet again.

3rd grade drawings

Matthew 10:29, 30
Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground outside your Father's care. And even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. So don't be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.

Isaiah 40:31
But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles.

Psalm 91
He will cover you with his feathers, and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart.

Parents, to take advantage of our time together, please encourage your children to make art at home! It is so important that they continue to develop their art skills as well as exercise the creative parts of their brains. We all know the value of the arts and hands on learning! It will help your child tremendously to have daily access to paper and drawing supplies as well as sensory materials such as play-dough and paints.
