2ND GRADE

February/March 2019

Second graders invented their own printing plates after reviewing a math concept in art! Ms. Savell is teaching her group about mathematical arrays, so we used this idea to create a collaborative piece about hearts around Valentine's Day. Then, students used the technique of printmaking to create their own original arrays! We also learned about Pop artists such as Andy Warhol, who used repetitive images in their art.

Second graders experimented with textures and clay, creating one-of-a-kind ornaments. After these pieces were fired, students applied oil pastel and then dipped the ceramics into a bath of diluted black tempera paint and/or a glitter paint bath. Mrs. Nichols sealed the ornaments with Crystal Clear Krylon Glaze spray. They are beautiful!

August/September 2018

Welcome back! I am delighted to have our amazing 2nd grade students back in art class. This month, we are creating art based on a nature theme, focusing on birds. We read in the Bible about God's encouragement to us, that He will cover us just as a bird covers her young with her wings. He loves us so much, He promised us protection and to guide our steps. Students discussed different kinds of birds and the way they are designed, with specialized beaks and talons and hollow bones for flight. Then, we chose an image of sparrow to carefully draw from observation. Younger students had the choice of following along with Mrs. Nichols step by step. We will paint these drawings when we meet again.

Matthew 10:29, 30
Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground outside your Father's care. And even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. So don't be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.

Isaiah 40:31
But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles.

Psalm 91
He will cover you with his feathers, and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart.

Parents, to take advantage of our time together, please encourage your children to make art at home! It is so important that they continue to develop their art skills as well as exercise the creative parts of their brains. We all know the value of the arts and hands on learning! It will help your child tremendously to have daily access to paper and drawing supplies as well as sensory materials such as play-dough and paints.
