THIS WEEK IN ART CLASS: LOWER SCHOOL (9-1-17)

3rd graders experiment with arranging their pieces of the "Perfect Square" cut up into bits.

FROTTAGE COLLAGE!

The first few weeks of school, we are focused on using our imaginations in creative ways while practicing the Art class procedures. This week, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th graders were inspired to create something new after viewing a reading of The Perfect Square, by Michael Hall. This children's book is about a creative square who re-invents himself over and over. When he is torn to bits, he creates a fountain, a garden, or a mountain, and when he is shattered, he makes a bridge out of the pieces. (Kindergarten watched another version of this video and practiced identifying and drawing basic shapes along with frottage, and 5th/6th graders exercised their creativity by using the same five symbols to invent at least ten different imaginary creatures.)

After the video clip, students created a colorfully patterned square with the "frottage" technique. What is "frottage?" It is simply a texture rubbing! We held crayons sideways to rub over a texture sheet under our "perfect square" papers, repeating the patterns all over the square. During the next class period, we cut this up into pieces to make an entirely new artwork! Students spent time experimenting with new arrangements, deciding what the pieces reminded them of. Would it be a boat, sailing over the sea? Or, would it be a person or a flower in a garden?

They are working hard! Hello, Amari!

After using a glue stick to carefully apply glue to the edges of each piece, students used a black marker to add more information to their art pieces. They were encouraged to tell us more about what they imagined, with plenty of detail!

Next week, we will finish our drawings in class. Here are a couple of neat designs (works in progress):

Lizard and Snake, by Peter, Grade 3

3rd grader Ashunti is creating a beautiful flower!
