High School Art I & II: 1st Semester

We are so proud of our students' accomplishments! Having work displayed in the annual school art show is an accomplishment in and of itself: only our best pieces went on exhibit and all the students had multiple drawings or paintings. I am very pleased with my students' commitment to excellence, respectful attitudes, and hard work!

We had a terrific semester even though it was shortened somewhat due to Covid. We only met 11 of the 18 weeks, but we had one student win first place at the district art competition! Wow! We have amazing kids at HCA.

Congratulations to the following students for winning first place in our 2021 school art show! Many thanks to our judge who spent several hours choosing winners: Ms. Sharon Christman, retired art educator from Mountain Brook City Schools and university professor, UAB.

Below the art show photos are examples of what we learned during our partial semester of art. It has been an honor and a privilege to serve as your art teacher this year, guys. I couldn't have asked for a better high school group. You were always interested in learning, you worked so hard to do well and listened to me any time I gave you feedback. I am proud of all of you. Thank you for a terrific semester!

For more information about what we learned this semester, please click on this link: High School Art I/II Curriculum Report, Fall Semester 2020. Our combined Art I/II class consisted of 5 ninth graders, 7 tenth graders, 1 eleventh grader, and 1 senior.

COLOR ANALYSIS AND FLUID POURS

painting by Harris W., grade 12

Students in Art I/II were challenged to analyze at least 10 colors in a photograph of a landscape, then do a fluid pour with acrylic paint in these colors. The results were unpredictable, but beautiful in every case! These paintings were wonderful abstract interpretations of the original photo.

Psalm 19:1-3
The heavens declare the glory of God;
And the firmament shows His handiwork.
Day unto day utters speech,
And night unto night reveals knowledge.
There is no speech nor language
Where their voice is not heard.

Alexandria painted a sketch of her landscape with extra paint after doing one of her fluid pours, seen below.

PAINTING STUDIES: VALUE

Painting takes much practice and many skills to develop: controlling the paint, using subtle values, matching colors, etc. These beautiful paintings represent such care and persistence: students matched the values in a photograph they took based on the theme of "Beauty in Surprising Places." First, they mixed values of black, white, and gray before attempting to do it again with tints and shades of a color. This is impressive work, guys!

SCRIPTURE INTERPRETATIONS

by Alexandria, grade 10

One of our first projects for the semester was to experiment with art media, making a variety of marks to see the differences and similarities among values in color pencil, watercolor, markers, etc. Students then discussed the psychology of color and line, inventing a design inspired by scripture. They also learned to apply the design principles of Unity, Variety, Balance, Contrast, Movement, Repetition, and Emphasis. These are amazing!

DRAWING FROM OBSERVATION: REALISM

For our drawing unit, students first did a collaborative paper sculpture design to observe, draw, and then apply a variety of smooth values to create modeling on the form. Then, they chose a small object of personal significance to draw for their final piece.
